Wilderness Survival

All over the world, hundreds of people every year find themselves inadvertently stranded, alone or in groups, in wilderness areas.

Wilderness is defined as any unsettled, uncultivated region left in its natural condition, especially:

  • A large wild tract of land covered with dense vegetation or forests.
  • An extensive area, such as a desert or ocean, that is barren or empty; a waste.
  • A piece of land set aside to grow wild.

In any wilderness survival situation, some common rules apply. However, unusual circumstances often force a survivalist to improvise.

Wilderness can be hot or cold, wet or dry, shaded or barren. So a good survivalist must examine the intricases of each particular wilderness survival situation.

In any wilderness survival situation, some of the issues that need to be considered immediately include:

  • Physical Safety
  • Finding Water
  • Finding Food
  • Signaling for Help
  • Finding Shelter
  • Building a Fire

A survivalist must prioritize. For example, unforseen events might make it a good idea to find shelter before signaling for help. Other circumstances might dictate that it would be wisest to gather water before finding shelter.

Animal life in the area can give you clues on how to survive. Animals also require food, water, and shelter. By watching them, you can find sources of water and food.

All of us were born kicking and fighting to live, but we have become used to the soft life. We have become creatures of comfort. We dislike inconveniences and discomforts. What happens when we are faced with a survival situation with its stresses, inconveniences, and discomforts? This is when the will to live - placing a high value on living - is vital.

The experience and knowledge you have gained through life will have a bearing on your will to live. Stubbornness, a refusal to give in to problems and obstacles that face you, will give you the mental and physical strength to endure.
