How are fires fought in Wilderness?Once Congress designates an area as Wilderness, the managing agency will employ Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) for fire suppression. Fire suppression, if used, would most often consist of a hand crew wielding hand tools. However, if human life, property or other valuable resources were threatened, the federal land manager could authorize using mechanical equipment.
